About Silver Bluff Audubon Sanctuary
Silver Bluff Audubon Sanctuary is a living testament to conservation success. In addition to serving as a working forest and a model for bird-friendly forestry, its 3,400 acres provide critical habitat for more than 200 bird species, including Bald Eagles and Wood Storks.
The land’s cultural history is as rich as its natural heritage. Once the ancestral lands of the Yuchi (Euchee) people and a sacred gathering place for the Creek (Muscogee), it later became a British fort during the Revolutionary War, the home of South Carolina Governor and notorious enslaver James Henry Hammond, and the site of one of the nation’s oldest African American churches and cemeteries.
Today, visitors will find:
-
More than 700 acres of restored longleaf pine forest
-
600 acres of protected hardwood stands
-
50 acres of lakes and ponds
-
20 miles of horse trails connecting people with nature
-
A state-of-the-art Motus tower, tracking bird migration
-
Recently enhanced visitor facilities and trail system
