The Prothonotary Warbler is one step closer to becoming the official migratory bird of South Carolina, thanks to the state Senate’s passage of S.383. The bill—which also includes “Lights Out for Birds” provisions—is now headed to the House for consideration when the legislature reconvenes in January.

The designation would not only raise awareness of this swamp-dwelling species—known for its vibrant yellow plumage and melodic song—but also highlight the importance of conserving South Carolina’s forested wetlands, which provide critical breeding habitat for migratory birds.
