A Natural and Historical Treasure
Silver Bluff Audubon Sanctuary stands as a testament to conservation success. In addition to serving as a working forest and bird-friendly forestry demonstration, the 3,400-acre sanctuary provides critical habitat for more than 200 bird species, including Bald Eagles and Wood Storks.
And from its origins as a Native American trading post and its role as a British fort during the Revolutionary War, to serving as the homesite of South Carolina Governor James Henry Hammond and one of the nation’s oldest African American churches, Silver Bluff boasts a cultural history as rich as its natural heritage.
Today, visitors will find:
- More than 700 acres of restored longleaf pine forest
- 600 acres of protected hardwood stands
- 50 acres of lakes and ponds
- 20 miles of horse trails connecting people with nature
- A state-of-the-art Motus tower, tracking bird migration
- Recently enhanced visitor facilities and trail system
