Typically, human communities are tough on birds. Food is scarce. Artificial lights scramble their migrations. Glass surfaces can prove fatal. But now, there’s hope. Across the country, eco-gardeners, proactive citizens, and enlightened public officials are creating “bird-friendly communities.” With cities and suburbs occupying 10 to 15 percent of South Carolina’s land area – and growing – it’s time for us to join in.
