Guided Bird Walks

Program Overview

South Carolina is hope to a vast diversity of bird life, and to help you learn a little more about the species that call our state "home," we'll be offering guided bird walks throughout the year. These walks are designed for birders of all ages and skill levels, so whether you can identify 3 birds or 300, we hope you'll join us for these programs! In addition to learning more about birds, our naturalist will also offer tips about easy ways to make your yard more bird-friendly. Below is a description of our walk locations and a schedule for the programs taking place this spring. For questions about these programs, please call 843-462-2150 or e-mail Matt Johnson at mgjohnson@audubon.org.

Walk Locations

We offer walks in a variety of places and habitats, including at the Francis Beidler Forest, at two locations in Summerville, and at Old Santee Canal Park in Moncks Corner. A description of each program is below. Please note that for the walks at Beidler and Old Santee Canal Park, advanced registration is required.

Francis Beidler Forest: The first Saturday of each month is a guided trek into the heart of Four Holes Swamp at Beidler Forest. Our naturalist will introduce you to the common birds of this old-growth forest, as well as cover general information about the swamp's natural history. This walk takes place from 8:30-11:00 and costs $12/person (Note: this fee does include the cost of general admission). Space is limited to 20 people, so please call the visitor center (843-462-2150) to reserve your spot!

Ashley River Park: This future Dorchester County Park is located along the banks of the Ashley River in Summerville, SC. Though not yet open to the public, we have special permission to visit this park on select mornings. Because there are no signs for the park, please e-mail Matt Johnson (mgjohnson@audubon.org) for information about directions to this property. Walks are FREE and occur from 8:00-10:00 a.m. No registration is required. A limited number of binoculars will be available for use.

Sawmill Branch Trail: This 7-mile walking and biking trail stretching throughout Summerville offers several great birding locations. It is also one of the best places in Summerville to see the beautiful Painted Bunting! For this program, we meet at the southern end of the trail at the Oakbrook YMCA off of Old Trolley Road (street address is 900 Crosscreek Dr, Summerville, SC 29485). Meet our naturalist in the gravel parking area next to the soccer fields near the beginning of the trail. Walks are FREE and occur from 8:00-10:00 a.m. No registration is required. A limited number of binoculars will be available for use.

Old Santee Canal Park: Audubon SC has partnered with Santee Cooper to offer guided walks at Old Santee Canal Park in Moncks Corner, SC. Commemorating the construction of America’s first canal, Old Santee Canal Park features a visitor center, interpretive areas, and four miles of trails and boardwalk that meander through woodlands and swamps. This walk takes place from 8:30 to 10:30 and does require advanced registration. There is a $3/person fee to participate and the program is limited to the first 20 people to sign up. For questions, and to register for a program, please call Old Santee Canal Park at 843-899-5200.

We hope to see you at our programs this spring!
