Lands We Protect
Till
The Till Preserve is located on the Little Saulkahatchie in western Colleton County near the small community of Williams. Donated to Audubon by the late Charlie Till of Orangeburg, South Carolina, the preserve protects 500 acres of pine forests, small fields, bottomland hardwood swamp forest, bluff slopes and seepage wetlands.
The Till Preserve supports a diverse plant and animal community representative of the South Atlantic Coastal Plain, including: mammals such as white tailed deer, bobcat, and raccoon; reptiles such timber rattlesnake, spotted turtle and box turtle; and birds such at Barred Owl, Red Shouldered Hawk, Great egret, Prothonotary Warbler and Brown-headed Nuthatch.
Historic and mid-twentieth century buildings located on the Till Preserve reveal its past as a subsistence family farm, as does a very old family cemetery. Presently, a Till family member cares for and uses the preserve for recreation. In the future, the property may be used as a location for Audubon to provide conservation education to rural residents and children from nearby schools.
