Wannamaker
Owned by the Columbia Audubon Society, the Wannamaker Nature Preserve encompasses 422 acres of mature pine plantation, pine-hardwood forests, old fields, young pine stands and hardwood stands, bottomland hardwoods, seepage fens, bluffs, and is transected by Lyons Creek. Ongoing hydrological research has been taking place on the site for several years.
Located 3.5 miles east of St. Matthews, in Calhoun County, it contains 2.75 miles of hiking trail and a simple picnic pavilion. Although not open to the general public, there are plans to make it available to guided programs for school children and adults, as a “Satellite Center” of the Francis Beidler Forest, once a parking area and restroom are completed. A standards-based curriculum is currently being developed for use on the site.
